About GITB

Title of the project:
Global eBusiness interoperability test bed methodologies, GITB

Partners:

CEN, supported by EIC, ETSI, NIST, KorBIT, AIAG, IAI, OAGi and OASIS.

Project background

The major challenge that European industries as well as the public sector are facing over the next decade is the transformation towards networked enterprises and shared service centers. In addition, the trend towards transforming businesses into globally integrated enterprises will continue, as well, and will be decisive for ensuring competitiveness of European industry. Governments will increase their offers of eGovernment services and further continue integration beyond municipal, local, regional and even national boundaries.

The GITB project specifically addresses e-business and enterprise interoperability, eBusiness interoperability being the ability of an enterprise to efficiently establish, conduct and develop e-business relationships with other organizations and individuals. eBusiness interoperability requires that a set of organizational as well as technical agreements can quickly be established between business partners .

This comprises the alignment of cross-organizational business processes, agree on the semantics, the structure and content of messages as well the definition of authentication mechanisms, transport and communication protocols. Any lack of interoperability would incur additional cost and efforts and pose a barrier to the transformation process and, thus, to the competitiveness and user and consumer friendliness of European business and service centers.

The GITB is responding to the increasing need for supporting actions in order to facilitate interoperability and develop and implement state of the art testing methodologies and practices for the entire e-business scenarios, e.g. more complex interactions with several partners using standards and other specifications of various origin.

Project objectives and deliverables

The main objective of GITB is to develop, under EU support and guidance, a set up of a comprehensive and global eBusiness interoperability test bed system in a global collaboration of European, North American and Asian partners. This objective is planned to be achieved in three phases, the current project covering phase two.

Phase 1 - Feasibility study produced CWA 16093:2010 which contains a feasibility study for a Global eBusiness Interoperability Test Bed (GITB)

Phase 2 - Developement will focus on the development of alternative approaches to architecting and implementing global eBusiness interoperability test bed. A recommended architecture and process to develop the test bed that follows from the requirements analysis with clear rationale. Assessment requirements from international stakeholders.

Phase 3 - Realisation will implement the test bed as shared testing facility; Provisioning of testing services to industry users, software vendors and SDOs.

Key deliverables of this first project phase included:

  • Interim report (July 2009) consisting of the draft feasibility study with the requirements towards a global test bed from different stakeholders.
  • Final report (Oct-Dec 2009) containing a final CEN Workshop Agreement consisting of the final version of the feasibility study with requirements for the test bed from the different stakeholders and the current state of eBusiness testing facilities and expertise.

The feasibility study (final report) has been submitted to the CEN Workshop eBES for endorsement as CWA (CEN Workshop Agreement). A CWA is an official CEN publication, available throughout Europe via the national standards organizations and in this case will be available free of charge on the CEN web site.

Key deliverables of the current second phase include:

  • Interim report (June 2011) consisting of 1) a synthesis of alternative architectural solutions, 2) an outline of the target architecture and 3) a validation of the target architecture and approach based on the use cases.
  • Final report (December 2011) containing the final version of the CEN Workshop Agreement and a Management Report on the work carried out for the execution of the action.

The GITB2 CWA will cover:

(1) Final version of the recommended architecture and process to develop the test bed;

(2) A global cooperation model based on the expressed intent of support of the key international organizations;

(3) The key components of a global eBusiness interoperability test bed;

(4) The outline of a testing methodology.
